The Wayne, Nebraska Chicken Show

Over thirty years ago, the Wayne Regional Arts Council founded the first Wayne, NE Chicken Show. The Council specifically chose “chickens” as the theme of their town’s annual festival because, according to their website:

~of the artistic potential;

~most people are familiar with chickens; and

~chickens are funny.

Apparently, the founders knew what they were clucking–I mean talking–about. The festival has won several awards including the Nebraska Outstanding Tourism Award in 1996. Nebraska Festival and Events, Inc. awarded the 2005 Show with two Nebraska State Pinnacle Awards. “Most Unique” merchandise item was awarded to the show’s Collectible 25th Anniversary Egg  The other award was for best “Festival Photo.”

But the Chicken Show has received federal recognition, too. It was featured, along with four other community events, in the Library of Congress in 1999.

The 37th Chicken Show is next weekend–July 7-9, 2017.

Scheduled events include Cluck Cluck Golf, Free Family Chicken Stories and Crafts, the World’s Largest Chicken Dance, a 5K Chicken Run, the Kiwanis Omelet Feed, National CluckOff and Hard Boiled Egg Eating Contests, and a whole bunch more eggs-cellent activities for all ages.

Event goers can also purchase “Clucktibles” (souvenirs) such as this adorable chicken hat.

About 5500-6000 residents live in Wayne which is located in northeast Nebraska and is the county seat of Wayne County.

So if you want to shake loose a few feathers and cluck-and-crow, pack up the chicks and head to Wayne for the Chicken Show. Send us pics!
